Why we feed a raw diet?
Let's start at the beginning; processed pet food has only been around since the 1920s. Before that, most canines consumed raw meat and table scraps, plus any food they hunted for themselves. The biology of dogs has not changed; only what we feed them has. Doesn't seem a bit disingenuous to ignore dogs ancestral diet?
Kibble is loaded with carbohydrates. Dogs are not designed in any way to digest carbs. When you read a label for dog kibble you will see ingredients like; Peas, pea protein, sweet potatoes, tapioca pea- flour and so on, all of these are carbohydrates, and we all know carbs turn into sugar in the body. However, what happens when your body has an excessive amount of sugar? We see autoimmune disorders, diabetes, pancreatitis, and thyroid issue.
Carbohydrates require the enzyme amylase to be broken down and carnivores do not produce amylase in their salivary glands as most herbivores and omnivores do.
Amylase helps begin the break down of starchy carbohydrates into simple sugars before they enter the stomach.
Although dogs do produce amylase, the enzyme is added further down in the digestive tract (in the pancreas and small intestine).
Carnivores exhibit a higher concentration of stomach acid. This allows for faster digestion of animal protein.
Moreover, the stronger stomach acid kills the disease-causing bacteria abundant in decaying meat. So when you think about your dog's digestive tract and a dogs bite (teeth shape and the way a canines mouth works ), you realize dogs are not meant to eat a dry kibble diet. While feeding a dog a raw diet, you will also see cleaner teeth, improved digestion, shinier healthier skin and coat, reduced allergies, just to name a few.
We feed our dogs a biologically appropriate raw dog food.
